Spain: CNMC supports ‘new business models’ in the new digital economy

 |  February 20, 2018

The president of Spain’s market regulator, the CNMC, José María Marín Quemada, spoke to the press stressing the importance of the “new economy,” as it will be an important agent for the new digital age that the world is preparing for and that is already upon it.

Referring specifically to the controversial conflict between traditional taxis and new services such as Uber and Cabify, Marín said that the initiatives undertaken to stop these new forms of business “are aimed only at earning some time, the only thing they are apparently going to be able to achieve.”

“The taxi is an extremely sensitive sector and we understand that it affects many people, but we also understand that the other companies, which have a different model, are pointing a way to the future and nothing prevents the more traditional sector from adapting to it.”

Finally, Marín stressed that for three years, all judgments that have been passed by the courts have supported the line taken by the CNMC. “Much of this success is due to the strength of our economic reports, in which we try to quantify the cost for efficiency and well-being,” said Marín.
