Spain: Government to return control over electric tolls to CNMC

 |  October 22, 2018

Spanish Minister of Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera said that the government is about to finalize an agreement with the CNMC that would grant the agency control over regulation of electricity tolls, a point of high tension between Spain and the European Union.

“The powers will lay with the regulator, with whom we are about to finalize an agreement in this regard, and we will send this to the Assembly as a reform of the Electricity Sector Law,” the minister said.

The position of the previous government, which reserved the right to set the value of electric tolls, led the European Commission to open a procedure against Spain in 2016. The conflict has not been resolved since, making it available to be taken up by the Court of Justice of the EU, which could lead to significant fines for the country.
