The Big Four and the Audit of Public-Interest Entities in the EU: The Need for Efficient Regulation of Mandatory Rotation

This paper aims to examine arguments and technical criteria that should guide an optimal regulatory policy of mandatory audit firm rotation in audits of Public-Interest Entities, in the light of the doctrine and empirical evidence in order to safeguard auditors’ independence and the quality of their work. Given the extreme concentration of the market for external audit in the EU, this analysis seeks to critically sustain why it cannot be said that the new European regulation has introduced a really efficient regulation for mandatory rotation.
