Philippines: Antitrust body fines Huawei

The Philippines’ antitrust body has slapped a ₱716,150 (US$6,500) fine on a smartphone manufacturer of Chinese electronics companies Huawei and Xiaomi for its late notification about its takeover of a Dutch semiconductor firm.

The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) stated Wingtech Technology, a contract manufacturer of Huawei and Xiaomi, only notified them about its acquisition of Nexperia Holding B.V. 194 days after it announced the transaction, when the PCC rules provide that it should have told the body about the merger within 30 days.

While it fined Wingtech for late notification, the PCC approved its acquisition of Nexperia, as this would not harm competition in the local smartphone market.

The PCC explained that Wingtech does not maintain facilities or have business operations in the Philippines. It added that Nexperia’s subsidiary in the Philippines acts as a manufacturer of semiconductors in the country and poses no harm to competition since all products assembled are for export and do not compete with other local products.
