Alliance One loses appeal for tobacco processing cartel

 |  July 20, 2012

The EU Court of Justice dismissed an appeal by Alliance One International Inc. to set aside a 1.8 million euro ($2.2 million) levied by the European Commission. In October 2004, Alliance and five other tobacco processing companies were fined a total of 20 million euros ($24.5 million) for “price-fixing and production-sharing between 1996 and 2001 in the Spanish tobacco-processing market.” Alliance and a subsidiary appealed after the fine was upheld in 2010 by a lower court. The company awaits rulings on several other appeals, including one for a 24 million euro ($29.5 million) joint liability fine issued for similar anticompetitive activities.
