Australia: ACCC raises concerns over WestConnex sale

 |  May 17, 2018

Australia’s competition watchdog claims Transurban holds a near-monopoly over toll roads in Sydney, leaving the regulator to weigh whether motorists would be better off if a competitor gained a majority stake in the AUS$16.8 billion (US$12.6 billion) WestConnex toll road project.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) initial concerns about a Transurban-led consortium taking control of WestConnex threaten to complicate the Berejiklian government’s privatisation of the toll road project within the next three months.

Supporting its concerns, the ACCC noted that Transurban controls 15 of the 19 road toll concessions in Australia and 7 of the 9 concessions in New South Wales.
