More than 700 Volkswagen owners in Australia have joined a class action against the company, a leading law firm said Thursday.
They are among the 91,000 VW and Audi owners in Australia whose vehicles were secretly fitted by the German giant carmaker with software to cheat on emissions tests.
Lawyer Damian Scattini with class actions specialist law firm Maurice Blackburn told The Australian newspaper VW had so far “failed to provide any clarity on how it intends compensating consumers who might lose thousands of dollars in increased running costs or reduced resale value for affected vehicles.”
Scattini said 700 VW owners had joined the class action in just 24 hours, and many more were expected before the law firm lodges the legal action against the company in about three weeks.
Volkswagen Australia made its first statement on the scandal on Wednesday, revealing 54,745 VW diesel cars sold in Australia including Golf, Polo, Jetta and Passat models had the devices fitted.
