Matthew Boswell has been appointed as Canada’s interim Commissioner of Competition, marking the end to John Pecman’s 34 years at the Competition Bureau.
Mr. Boswell joined the Competition Bureau in 2011 and has been Senior Deputy Commissioner since September 2012. Mr. Boswell worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto, prosecuting all types of criminal offences. Immediately prior to joining the Bureau, Mr. Boswell was Senior Litigation Counsel in the Enforcement Branch at the Ontario Securities Commission, where he primarily prosecuted securities fraud and related matters. His appointment as Interim Commissioner of Competition takes effect May 31, 2018.
Mr. Pecman finished his five-year term on May 30, ending 34 years of service at the Competition Bureau. He joined the Bureau as an investigator in 1984. He worked in every enforcement branch until he was appointed Interim Commissioner in 2012. In 2013, he became the first-ever economist to be appointed Commissioner of Competition.
