Canada: Comp Bureau conducts raids in bread price fixing probe

Canada’s second largest food retailer, Sobey’s Inc., confirmed that the Canadian Competition Bureau (CCB) raided three company offices on Tuesday, October 31, as part of the regulator’s probe into possible price fixing of bread products by suppliers and retailers in Canada’s grocery industry.

Sobey’s spokesperson Jacquelin Corrado said, “We are co-operating to support the investigation and have advised employees internally of the process underway.”

Two other grocers, Loblaw and Metro, have also confirmed the investigation that is looking at collusion going back as far as 2001.

Two of Canada’s largest producers of bakery products, Canada Breads and George Weston, have also stated that they have been included in the investigation.
