Dublin Port: Competitive or Dominant?

An Irish Competition Authority review will determine whether Dublin Port is economically dominant or “very competitive.” Transport Minister Leo Varadkar noted that “40 percent of our GDP” goes through Dublin Port, which operates eight independent terminals that compete for trade. The Government plans to allow private ownership of ports that aren’t “strategically important” in an effort to increase competition. The Competition Authority will conduct an in-depth study of other ports as well — most of which are State-owned.
