German Watchdog Settles With Furniture Store

Germany’s competition authority has settled with XXXLutz over the furniture retailer’s demanding discounts from suppliers, which could have been an abuse of its dominant position.

XXXLutz wanted to offer an anniversary discount. At the urging of the Bundeskartellamt, the store is now refraining from their flat-rate demand for a 7.5% “anniversary discount.”

Instead, the company has now negotiated the discount, which should apply for six months in 2020, individually with each supplier and agreed consideration. In exchange, the Bundeskartellamt will refrain from examining the matter further.
