Germany: Schäuble wants to rebalance EU Commission’s role

As a way of depoliticizing decision-making in the European Commission, German Finance Minister wants to strip the commission of its core oversight powers, namely merger approval and antitrust monitoring. Under his plan these powers would be moved to independent bodies.

He originally laid out this proposal on July 14, 2015. Berlin considers that stripping the Commission of regulatory oversight powers would not weaken it, but would instead ensure regulatory independence from a more political EC. The position is markedly different from the French and Italian stand which favors a quick move towards a fuller political union.
