Hong Kong’s Competition Commission Appoints New Chief Executive Officer

The Hong Kong Competition Commission announced the appointment of Mr. Rasul Butt as its next CEO for a term of three years commencing May 3, 2021. The appointment was made after a global recruitment exercise to identify a suitable candidate for the post.

Mr. Butt joined the Commission in April 2015 as Executive Director (Corporate Services & Public Affairs), and was appointed to the position of Senior Executive Director in July 2016 overseeing the policy advisory, advocacy and corporate functions of the CommissionSince late November 2020, he has been delegated the powers and responsibilities of the CEO of the Commission upon the departure of the former CEO, Mr. Brent Snyder. Prior to joining the Commission, Mr. Butt spent more than 16 years at the Urban Renewal Authority, Hong Kong, where his last position was General Manager (Corporate Planning).

With his proven leadership skills, extensive experience in promoting competition policy and law in Hong Kong, solid international competition network and an unrivalled understanding of the Commission’s operations, I am confident that he will be able to lead the Commission’s executive arm in continuing its mission of safeguarding market competition in Hong Kong through effective law enforcement, policy advisory and advocacy.”
