India: CCI will probe broadcaster Prashar Bharati

 |  September 10, 2017

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation against state-run Prasar Bharati for alleged abuse of its dominant position in providing infrastructure for frequency modulation in radio broadcasting.

The commission has ordered the probe based on a complaint filed by Mumbai-based Clear Media against Prasar Bharati and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Clear Media had entered into an agreement with Prasar Bharati in 2006 for using its common transmission tower in Delhi. The dispute between the two companies started after the collapse of the tower in 2014.

Finding prima facie evidence of violation of Section 4 of the Competition Act by the public broadcaster, CCI has asked the Director General, its investigation arm, to carry out a probe.
