Mexico: America Movil, Televisa can keep exclusive sports broadcasting rights

Mexico telco authorities will reportedly allow the nation’s top telco America Movil and top cable company Grupo Televisa to maintain their exclusive sports broadcasting deals.

America Movil currently has the exclusive rights to broadcast the 2016 Olympics, while Televisa has exclusive rights to broadcast World Cup matches this year, in 2018 and in 2022.

The Federal Telecommunications Institute said the companies, which both lead their perspective markets, can keep those exclusive agreements, but are barred from making similar exclusive deals in the future.

Regulators had previously ruled each company to be dominant in their industries, a declaration that will allow regulators greater ability to crack down on abuse of market power.
