Record-setting criminal fine and prison sentences for Japanese auto part conspiracy

 |  January 30, 2012

Yazaki Corp. and DENSO Corp, Japanese auto suppliers, agreed to pay criminal fines of $470 million and $78 million, respectively, for their roles in a price-fixing conspiracy in the sale of automobile electrical parts to automakers. Yazaki’s $470 million fine is the second-largest criminal fine stemming from a Sherman Act violation.

As part of the plea deal, two Yazaki executives have agreed to serve two years in U.S. prison; two others have agreed to serve 15 months. The two-year sentence is the longest term of imprisonment ever imposed on a foreign national voluntarily submitting to U.S. jurisdiction for a Sherman Act violation.
