South Africa: Authorities asked to eye shopping mall exclusivity deals

South Africa’ Competition Commission has reportedly been called on to review exclusivity deals made by shopping malls with retailers.

The South African Real Estate Investment Trust Association has reportedly asked the Commission to investigate such exclusive dealing that the group said could harm competition and hurt economic growth. Reports say malls have allowed landlords and the largest shops to sign such exclusivity deals to bar rivals from opening competing stores in the same mall.

In a statement Friday, the real estate group said those deals are being used, particularly by grocery retailers, to “fight to restrict each other in market share.”
