South Africa: Competition Commission probes grocery retailers

 |  June 5, 2017

The Competition Commission is calling on consumers, small and independent grocery retailers and interested members of society to participate in public hearings into the Grocery Retail Market Inquiry across Gauteng.

The Commission believes there are features in the grocery retail sector that may be preventing, distorting or restricting competition and ultimately, adversely affecting consumers and households.

The hearings will be focused on the influx of supermarket chains into townships, peri-urban areas and rural areas and the informal economy.

The hearings will be held in Pretoria on Monday and Tuesday, then Johannesburg from Wednesday to Friday.
