UK: Commission rejects first reviewed NHS merger, but fight not over yet

Two healthcare foundation trusts looking to merge received unwelcome news as the Competition Commission announced its provisional findings of its investigation into the deal. Reports say the Commission found a merger between Christchurch Hospitals Foundation Trust and Poole Hospital Foundation Trust would significantly reduce competition in 58 markets, including maternity and emergency services. The regulator did say, however, it would consider additional remedies offered by the parties but said it is unlikely to offer a future approval. The merger within the NHS is the first ever reviewed by the Competition Commission since healthcare mergers fell under the jurisdiction of the Commission and the Office of Fair Trading.
