UK: MPs to question Sainsbury’s and Asda CEOs

 |  June 13, 2018

Asda and Sainsbury’s chief executives will be brought before MPs on June 20 to answer questions on how the proposed landmark merger between the two supermarkets will impact British farmers, other suppliers and consumers.

Sainsbury’s Mike Coupe and Asda’s Roger Burnley will be quizzed by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA), which is particularly concerned about the ramifications for suppliers.

The Competition and Markets Authority has started a preliminary probe into the deal, ahead of a formal investigation, while on Wednesday, June 13, lawmakers from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee said that they would also gather evidence on it.

“Grocery retailers do not have a great record of treating their suppliers well,” the committee’s chair Neil Parish said in a statement.
