UK: Royal Mail pleads for Ofcom intervention

 |  June 20, 2014

Royal Mail has asked for communications watchdog Ofcom to intervene on its behalf as the postal service struggles to compete against TNT.

Royal Mail says rival TNT Post UK will cut Royal’s revenue by hundreds of millions of dollars and has asked Ofcom to launch a review into competition in the industry, reports say.

”Our analysis indicates that the underlying economics of the UK postal market would create strong incentives and opportunities for TNT Post to achieve a wider roll-out and larger market share than its currently publicly-stated plans suggest,” Royal Mail said in its filing to the regulator.

Royal’s submission follows TNT’s own complaint filed to Ofcom regarding Royal price hikes; Ofcom investigated the matter and Royal Mail subsequently suspended those price hike plans.
