UK: Small business banking could be next CMA target

The Competition and Markets Authority is reportedly mulling whether to continue work already done by the Office of Fair Trading in probing the UK’s small business banking industry, ahead of the CMA’s official launch next month.

The new competition regulator, set to combine the OFT and the Competition Commission, said it will decide soon whether to launch a full-scale inquiry into the treatment of small businesses by major banks; the probe would begin next fall.

The investigation could have wider implications for the government, reports say, as regulators are looking to divest a 33 percent stake in Lloyds Banking Group.

The CMA said it is considering whether to pick up where the OFT will leave off in its scrutiny of the industry.
