US: Carlos Slim threatens T-Mobile bidding war

 |  July 22, 2014

Just days after Sprint and T-Mobile were reported to be planning a joint bid during next year’s spectrum auction in support of their expected merger, America Movil is now said to be planning a possible bid to acquire T-Mobile, a move that could set off a bidding war for the wireless firm.

According to The Wall Street Journal, America Movil owner Carlos Slim is eyeing a T-Mobile bid after the sale of some of his stake in the Mexican wireless operator. Further, say reports, Slim currently owns a stake in fifth-place US wireless carrier TracFone, which leases capacity from some of the network giants.

All of this, some experts say, could be leading to Slim making a grab at T-Mobile. Other reports say, however, that T-Mobile and Sprint are close to finalizing a deal, making it highly unlikely America Movil could ever actually acquire T-Mobile.
