US: Controversy over judge’s premature siding with US regs against Apple in e-books case

In what reporters have deemed an “unusual” statement made by Judge Denise Cote, Apple Inc., which is currently defending itself in a case initiated by the US Department of Justice over its pricing of e-books, will likely be required to settle, and Judge Cote will likely side with the US. The judge reportedly made the statement that she would likely decide that US officials can present enough evidence during trial to prove Apple conspired to fix e-book prices. Reporters who heard the statement at a hearing last Thursday have expressed anger at the statement, which suggests the judge has already decided in favor of the US before the case has actually gone to trial.
