US: DOJ wants FCC to modify spectrum policy, protect smaller competitors

While the US Department of Justice did not ask the Federal Communications Commission to reserve spectrum for smaller players in the nation’s communications market, the DOJ has reportedly called on the communications authority to alter some of its policies with the intention of preserving competition. In a letter sent to the FCC, the DOJ noted that AT&T and Verizon dominate the market of low-frequency spectrum, resulting in Sprint and T-Mobile’s hampered strength to rival competitors. While the FCC is already in the process of modifying policy to distribute spectrum to carriers, no changes have been finalized. Currently, the FCC is hoping to cap the amount of spectrum telecommunications companies can obtain.
