US: Sprint and T-Mobile expected to announce deal in November

Sprint reported a narrower quarterly loss on Wednesday, October 25, than analysts expected as it added subscribers, and the wireless carrier declined to hold a post-earnings conference call amid speculation of a merger with rival T-Mobile.

Sources told Reuters this week that T-Mobile and Sprint were laying the groundwork for special committees of their boards of directors to decide on a merger between the third and fourth largest US wireless carriers.

The companies are expected to announce an agreement in the first half of November to create a company with more than 130 million US subscribers, just behind VerizonCommunications and AT&T.

T-Mobile and Sprint, along with their respective parents, German carrier Deutsche Telekom and Japanese venture fund SoftBank, continue to engage in talks over a deal, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The companies believe a deal will be announced in the next few weeks.
