US: World’s largest airline moves step closer to reality

American Airlines has officially won approval to merger with US Airways, according to reports, in a deal that will result in the largest airline on the planet. The news came after a decision from Judge Sean H. Lane in bankruptcy court; American filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2011. While the merger has been approved, the judge did not give his go-ahead for a proposed $20 million severance package for Tom Horton, who currently runs AMR Corp., American’s parent company. The Department of Justice, as well as US Airways shareholders, have yet to approve of the deal; the parties said they expect the deal to close by this fall.
