Experience & Areas of Interest:
Dr. Vanessa Yanhua Zhang is a Managing Director at Global Economics Group and a Senior Research Fellow at the Market & Regulation Law Center (MRLC) of Renmin University. Her main research areas include industrial organization and economics analysis in competition policy, and she leads the firm’s Greater China Practice, providing expert opinions on various competition issues in Greater China, the U.S. and E.U. She has worked a wide range of competition matters involving allegations of monopolization, foreclosure practices, vertical restraints, merger analysis and intellectual property. She has consulted on projects across various industries, such as transportation, chemical, e-commerce, payment card, banking, pharmaceutical, high tech, electricity, telecommunication, and consumer products etc. In China, Dr. Zhang has submitted expert reports before the Supreme People’s Court of China, Provincial Higher Court, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the Anti-Monopoly Bureau of Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation (SHAMR) and has provided testimonies as an expert witness. She has been giving antitrust economic trainings to anti-monopoly agencies for their capacity building and assisting agencies with economic analysis in their merger reviews. She has been featured in Who’s Who Legal: Competition Economists.

She is the author of several academic articles on China’s merger control and Anti-Monopoly Law (AML), economic analysis of competition policy, conspiracies, electricity market. Dr. Zhang has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Competition Law and Economics, Review of Industrial Organization, Annals of Economics and Statistics (Annales d'Economie et Statistique), Competition Policy International, Antitrust Chronicle, Energy Policy, Electronics Intellectual Property, etc., and contributed to several books on competition policy and regulation such as “Economics and Regulation in China”, “Merger Control in European and Global Perspective”, and “Competition Policy and Regulation: Recent Development in China, the US and Europe”. She is also the editor of the books “Competition Policy in Asia: Essays on Recent Development” (2015), “Antitrust Law and Economics of Internet Industry” (2018). Dr Zhang has provided comments on China’s AML, Intellectual Property and related regulations to Chinese enforcement agencies.

Dr Zhang serves as a Senior Research Fellow at Market and Regulation Law Center (MRLC) of Renmin University of China and has taught regulation and antitrust economics to graduate students. She is also the Editor of the Asia Competition Column at Competition Policy International, the Special Editor of Antitrust Chronicle, and a member of the latter’s Advisory Board. Prior to joining Global Economics Group (GlobalEcon), Dr Zhang took various positions at Law and Economics Consulting Group (LECG) and worked as a visiting researcher at CPB Netherland Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.
