Peru: Indecopi probes possible steel dumping

 |  October 10, 2017

Peru’s competition and market regulator, Indecopi, will launch an investigation into imports of steel bars for construction originating in Brazil and Mexico, which have been affecting the local sector.

Imports from Brazil and Mexico are thought to be reaching the Peruvian market at predatory prices (prices generated by dumping practices), whose average undercutting margin was 22% between January 2014 and March 2017.

In the complaint lodged by the National Production Branch (RPN), steel rods originating in Brazil and Mexico are seen to have increased their share in Peru’s market as a result of unfair dumping practices.

The decision to launch the investigation is still pending, as the regulator waits for the Committee on Dumping, Subsidies and Elimination of Non-Tariff Commercial Barriers to make the decision. This Commission should immediately initiate a rigorous investigation into dumping practices.
