Spain: CNMC to review fiber network regulation in 2019

 |  June 18, 2019

Taking into consideration the rapid deployment of fiber optics carried out by Spanish telephone operators Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, and the Masmóvil group, the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has announced that it will review the current regulation on Fiber optics, which since 2016 has forced Telefónica to share its network with its rivals at a regulated price.

“After the summer we will begin to analyze the market again. It is in the action plan of the CNMC,“ commented Diego Otero of the CNMC during the fifth edition of the Ingenium Mobile forum. “We have information on how competition has evolved in different areas… all this allows us to have much more information to make a market analysis that I believe will indicate what the next steps to take are.”

Telefónica is the main interested party in a possible revision, since it has been requesting changes to the current regulations for some time, despite having agreements with both Orange and Vodafone to share its network.
