Argentina: Government puts an end to Intercargo monopoly on airport ground services

The Government of Argentina has repealed a measure, approved in 2001, that allowed for a virtual monopoly by state company Intercargo in the provision of ground services in airports throughout the country. The decision opens the market to competition in this important sector.

Ground services include the boarding and unboarding of passengers, loading and unloading of luggage, towing, signalling, and the exterior and interior cleaning of aircraft, among others.

the ANAC considered it “necessary to allow domestic air transport companies to self-provide and provide ground services to companies within their same business group”. “Based on this, it is necessary to reduce operating costs and improve the quality of the service on land,” the agency said.
