Australia: ACCC devises plan to lower wireless costs

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is suggesting new ways to boost competition in the nation’s wireless market and lower costs for consumers, say reports.

    The regulator released a discussion paper Friday that outlines proposals to drive down costs. Among the suggestions, reports say, includes a uniform, set price for landline-to-mobile calls and mobile-to-mobile calls. The ACCC also proposed mirroring pricing strategies after other nations.

    There are major price discrepancies between telco services in Australia and elsewhere, the watchdog said.

    The ACCC first launched an investigation into the wireless industry in May after finding evidence that wireless operators were overcharging each other to receive calls and text messages on each others’ mobile phones.
