Australia: Consumer regulator set sights on Volkswagen

Critical discussions the federal government will hold on Friday with car makers Volkswagen and Audi, could dictate its reaction to the emissions rigging scandal, as the consumer watchdog and litigators prepare for possible legal action.

Federal Minister for Territories, Local Government and Major Projects Paul Fletcher said the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development was in regular contact with VW Australia and Audi Australia, and the government would consider appropriate actions after the meeting.

“It is critical that accurate and comprehensive information is provided to the public, and the government has made this expectation clear to VW Australia and Audi Australia,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The government expects full disclosure on affected vehicles once all information has been ascertained.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warned on Thursday Volkswagen faced fines of up to $1.1 million for every breach of the law, if it is found to have used an emissions-rigging device in Australia.
