Bolivia/Brazil: Hydroelectric plant to be constructed on border

 |  April 27, 2015

Brazil and Bolivia’s governments have entered negotiations for the building of a new trans-national hydroelectric complex to be built on the Madeira river. The project seeks to stay ahead of the surging energy needs in both countries’ growing economies.

The plant would be operational in 2022, with up to 3,000 MWT of installed capacity. The plan is part of a Brazilian investment package and will try to replicate the model used on the Itaipú hydroelectric plant, owned jointly by Paraguay and Brazil.

The new plant’s capacity would far exceed Bolivian demand for the area, making it a net electricity exporter to Brazil. The new plant is also expected to allow for optimal use of existing power plants by helping to regulate the river’s flow.
