Last Friday, September 15, Brazil’s president Michel Temer annulled the appointment of Amanda Athayde Linhares Martins as general superintendent of the country’s competition authority, and replaced her with current commissioner Alexandre Cordeiro Macedo.
The name of Macedo was sent to the Senate to be approved. The indication was published in the “Official Gazette of the Union” on Friday. Macedo is linked to the Partido Progresista, “PP” political party, and, according to sources from the Planalto, his name was a requirement of the party and endorsed by Senator Ciro Nogueira (PI) and the government leader in the Chamber, deputy Aguinaldo Ribeiro (PB).
Earlier this month, the PP presented to the Federal Supreme Court the first indictment in court that indicts members of a political party, the PP, as participants in a criminal organization to divert money from Petrobras.
Brazil’s competition authority’s, Cade’s, superintendence is a very powerful post. Among other attributions, Cade is responsible for judging and punishing administratively, in a single instance, individuals and legal entities that commit violations of the economic order.
According to government sources, the PP pressed Macedo’s appointment and ousted the candidate of the minister Torquato Jardim (Justice), Amanda Athayde.
