Colombia’s Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) endorsed the major business merger that is the worldwide purchase of American agricultural giant Monsanto, by the German chemical conglomerate Bayer.

However, the SIC has set conditions on its approval, requiring the sale of Bayer’s watermelon seed business at the local level, covering all the products identified with the Nunhems brand.

Although the merger of Bayer and Monsanto – which is calculated at around US$66 billion – has passed with no major problems in Colombia, while other jurisdictions such as the European Union have taken a closer look at whether, among others, this merger might harm competition in the herbicides and seed sectors.
