Costa Rica: Ministry names new Head of Competition commission

 |  August 11, 2015

Attorney Errol Solis Mata has been named as Director of Costa Rica’s Competition Directorate. The announcement by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC) added that his responsibilities will include the Competition Research, Promotion and Technical Support departments in the Ministry.

Solis Mata has been a senior official with the MEIC since the start of the current administration, said the report. Mr. Solis, who will be taking charge of the COPROCOM’s technical support and promotion of competition activities, will find an organization rocked by recent changes including resignations and internal feuds with Minister Welmer Ramos, who he accused of attempting to strip powers away from competition regulators.

COPROCOM carries out market research and analysis to prevent competition violations, monopolies or price-fixing, as well as the ability to approve mergers and acquisitions for Costa Rican companies.

Mr. Solis’ position will place him as a close advisor to the Economics minister. He brings 20 years of economic consultancy to the job, giving him ample experience and knowledge of the workings of Costa Rica’s economic groups and market dynamics.
