Regulators in New Zealand have approved the merger of Office Depot and Staples.
Dr. Mark Berry, chairman of New Zealand’s Commerce Commission, announced that the merger between the two office superstores would not substantially lessen competition in New Zealand. Office Depot operates there as OfficeMax, the competitor it acquired in 2013.
“The workplace product market for government and large corporate customers is currently competitive, and we consider that the merged entity would continue to face competition from three companies — Fuji Xerox, Office Products Depot and Corporate Consumables,” Berry said.
Staples said Friday that it continues to seek approval from regulatory agencies in the U.S., the European Union, Canada, Australia and China.
