EU: Football fans persist in financial rule fight with EC

Weeks after the European Commission dismissed a complaint launched by an individual against the Financial Fair Play rules that regulate UEFA football teams, a group of fans are reigniting the debate against the policy.

Fans of the Paris Saint-Germain team joined fans of Manchester City to decry the regulations implemented after significant financial losses from some of the top soccer teams in 2011.

Thirty-five fans reportedly filed a complaint with the Commission against the rules, claiming they are anticompetitive and “no more than a prohibition of investment.” The complainants are grouped as the “supporters-against-FFP.”

But the UEFA argues that the rules are actually pro-competitive and “fully in line with EU law.”

The FFP rules limit how much teams can spend to obtain new talent and other business ventures.
