EU: Roaming fees cut in time for summer holidays

As summer holiday planning gets underway, the European Commission has enacted rules that cut wireless roaming fee charges, reports say.

The price cuts, which come into effect today, apply to all 28 EU member states, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, though do not apply to Switzerland, reports say.

Roaming costs have been regulated by the Commission since 2007 after authorities found that “weak competition among national operators for roaming customers” has lead to excessive costs. Those fees, the Commission said, “are a market distortion with no rational place in a single market.”

In its latest round of fee caps, the Commission exuberantly announced that roaming fees will be cut by more than half. “It will become even cheaper to use maps, watch videos, check mails and update social networks while traveling across the EU,” the regulator said in its announcement.

Reports say the new caps will be in effect until June 30, 2017.
