The Biden administration has chosen John Hennessy, the chairman of Google parent Alphabet, and four other experts in the technology industry to assist with the research and development of next-generation computer chips.
The Commerce Department is set to announce the selected individuals on Tuesday, who will be responsible for choosing a board of trustees to manage the National Semiconductor Technology Center. This public-private partnership was authorized to lead research on next-generation chips as part of last year’s bipartisan semiconductor manufacturing and research law.

The board is expected to make decisions on the location of the center’s research facilities. President Joe Biden aims to expand the domestic chipmaking industry to create high-paying jobs, reduce dependence on major producers in China and Taiwan, and give the United States an advantage in advanced technologies that will power future military technologies.
The NSTC is expected to support and extend US leadership in semiconductor research, design, engineering, and advanced manufacturing for generations to come.
