India: Prime Minister Modi calls for antitrust support

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took office last May, is calling for strengthened competition law to back his mantra for the nation: scale, skill, and speed.

Reprts say Modi is championing the adoption of a national competition policy to back the Three-S mantra. India’s current national competition policy has been pending implementation since 2012.

The policy would broaden the currently competition law regime and the Competition Commission of India’s ability to enforce competition across industries. But without national policy, reports say, there is a lack of enforcement powers to correct anticompetitive results from new laws and policies.

The national policy, Modi says, will provide an implementation path for the three S’s.
