Ireland: Telcos ordered to retain data in new competition rules

 |  March 31, 2014

New legislation that reforms Ireland’s competition law was published Monday, reports say, and the telecommunications industry will see significant effects from the new rules.

According to reports, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation published the bill that would require Internet service providers and telephone companies to retain call and traffic data for at least two years in case the information is needed for a competition probe.

The bill also merges the National Consumer Agency and the Competition Authority to become the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, a “watchdog with real teeth,” authorities said. The regulator will have extended powers to probe various competition concerns.
