On Friday, Japan’s privacy regulator issued a warning to OpenAI, a startup supported by Microsoft and responsible for the ChatGPT chatbot, advising against the collection of sensitive data without obtaining people’s consent.

The Personal Information Protection Commission stated that OpenAI should reduce the amount of sensitive data it collects for machine learning. It also mentioned the possibility of taking additional measures if necessary.

Regulators globally are working to establish regulations for the application of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which has the ability to produce text and images. Supporters liken its impact to the introduction of the internet.

Despite lagging behind in certain technology trends, Japan is motivated to stay up-to-date with advancements in AI and robotics in order to sustain productivity in the face of a shrinking population.
