Mexico: Airline collusion caused 2 bn pesos in damages, says COFECE

Mexico’s flagship airlines, Aeromexico and Mexicana de Aviación, caused damages to the air transport market equal to more than 2 billion pesos (US$101 million) between 2008 and 2010 due to their use of monopolistic practices, as revealed by the Federal Commission for Economic Competition (COFECE).

The COFECE investigation, which discovered exchanges of confidential information between the Aeromexico and Mexicana de Aviacion airlines, establishing coordinated prices and collusion in the air transport market, affecting the entire Mexican territory.

Therefore, COFECE sanctioned Aeromexico with $86,190,000 pesos, while the minimum amount was applied to Mexicana, since the company has since formally declared bankruptcy. The agency also confirmed sanctions on three individuals, for an amount greater than 2 million pesos (US$ 100,000 approximately).
