Mexico: COFECE clears AT&T-Time Warner merger

 |  August 14, 2017

Mexican competition regulator COFECE authorized the planned merger between the giant telcos AT&T and Time Warner. The merger would make the second largest mobile phone company in the United States a conglomerate of audiovisual and entertainment media with global reach.

The companies notified COFECE of their intention in January 2017. The transaction consists of the indirect acquisition by AT&T of all Time Warner’s shares, including its various businesses in Mexico. The concentration will also be reviewed by the Federal Telecommunications Institute, as it is a matter within its competence.

COFECE determined that in the areas where it is the competent authority, there is little chance of damaging the competition process in Mexico, since AT&T and Time Warner do not participate in similar activities in this country.
