Mexico’s Federal Commission of Economic Competition (Cofece) has launched a probe into the presence of possible monopolistic practices – abusing market power to generate excessive profits – in the sector of e-commerce platforms and related services. This is the first time that an investigation has been opened due to competition related to Mexico’s digital market.
Internet sales represent just over 3% of total retail sales in Mexico, where buyers fear fraud and often pay in cash.
In October, Amazon launched a new cash payment service in the country in an effort to expand its reach in Mexico and compete with Walmart de Mexico, also known as Walmex, along with other retailers that drive Mexican consumers to buy online. .
The COFECE recalled that, although e-commerce platforms present more options for purchasing, as well as competitive pressure for traditional markets, they should be monitored to avoid abuse and protect free competition.
