Mexico: President of COFECE speaks up for Agency’s performance, denies conflicts of interest

 |  February 26, 2019

The president of the Federal Commission of Economic Competition (COFECE) of Mexico, Alejandra Palacios, defended the decisions and actions taken by the institute she presides before the Mexican Congress, responding to recent questions from senators with ruling party MORENA.

Palacios also rejected statements made by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador disparging regulatory agencies, holding that these work well and have the budget needed to carry out their activities, stating that any conflict of interest or suspected irregularity should have its corresponding complaint submitted through the appropriate channels.

“All commissioners have asked not to participate” in certain cases over possible conflicts of interest, noting that it would be “impossible to think that a family member once, twice or four-times removed will not work in at least one of the sectors” analyzed by the regulator.
