Mexico: Labor union seeks to stop Telmex split

 |  March 12, 2018

The Union of Telephone Operators of the Mexican Republic (STRM) has approved a series of actions that will be implemented in the coming months to prevent the functional division of Teléfonos de México (Telmex), approved last week by telecom regulator, the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT).

The members of the STRM agreed that “the union should deploy all its political and organizational capacity” to seek to reverse this decision by the regulator. Among these actions, the union will move to strike at the company, demanding the fulfillment of the Collective Labor Agreement.

Likewise, the union is contemplating submitting a complaint before the International Labor Organization over the resolution, as well as the International Human Rights Commission and other international organizations, agreeing to legally hold the federal government and the IFT responsible for possible changes and job losses resulting from this decision.
