Ukraine Latest To Approve Microsoft/Activision Deal

 |  May 1, 2023

The Ukraine Antimonopoly Commission expressed minimal worry about potential consumer consequences resulting from the deal, particularly in relation to the cloud gaming industry, which has been a contentious issue among regulatory entities.

“Microsoft Corporation and Activision Blizzard, Inc. do not carry out economic activity in the field of cloud gaming services in Ukraine,” reads a translated statement.

“The concerns expressed by the [EU Commission] and the reasons for the prohibition of concentration in Great Britain are not relevant for assessing its impact on the dynamics of competition in Ukraine.”

“Taking into account the above-mentioned factors, the Committee allowed the specified concentration.”

The reference to Great Britain by Ukraine relates to the decision made by The UK Competition and Markets Authority on April 26, where they voted against approving Microsoft’s proposal, presenting a significant obstacle to the plan. Microsoft plans to appeal the decision. In August, the company will also face a lawsuit from the United States’ Federal Trade Commission, which has opposed the Activision Blizzard purchase since it was first announced in January 2022.
